Preview: Coombe Weekender
Coventry’s festival scene has long been defined by Godiva but the city is now becoming a hot spot for start-up all-day celebrations and weekend events. From the inaugural Comedy Festival, the growing Food Festival and countless others including Film, Coffee and Well-Being editions, Coventry has finally pulled up it’s festival socks. However, when we heard about the Coombe Weekender, we sat up sharply, scrolled our eyes down the early line-up and knew that this was in a different festival league.
Modern festivals don’t always follow the traditions of those we define as iconic. Godfather like institutions such as Glastonbury and it’s off-spring (Leeds/Reading and the formerly known V-Festival) stay true to their core values whilst others including El Dorado, Feastival and countless others are now pushing the boundaries to include more than just music but a sense of community within their niche.
Thankfully for Coventry, the Coombe Weekener, looks set to continue the contemporary trend and provide not only a stage for household names, who will attract thousands of visitors to the city, but give emerging local acts a platform. Launching on Saturday 3rd August and running until Sunday 4th, the Coombe Weekender will see acts including The Libertines (Headline), Tom Grennan, Crystal Waters, Faithless and Reverend & The Makers perform after Coventry’s local scene gets exposure through Candid, Athens and BLVFF.
Festival organisers, MidLive Entertainment, are also creating a huge area dedicated to families, foodies and thrill-seekers as day two sees Sigala take to the main stage whilst many more aim to lift the roof off the Big Top. Offstage entertainment will come from the food village, which will be cooking up delights from all corners of the globe, providing snacks, larger meals and drinks. This areas will also play host to a number of day-time activities, creating a friendly environment for people of all ages.
Day tickets for the Coombe Weekender start at £29.50 and weekend tickets are £70 with family and VIP tickets also available. There is also the option to camp and the organisers say that further acts will be announced very soon.
